Supported Independent Living in NDIS Explained

Living independently is a powerful goal for many people with disability. Supported Independent Living, or SIL, is one way the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) helps make that goal a reality. With the right supports in place, people can enjoy more autonomy, connection, and comfort in a home environment that meets their needs.

What is SIL in the NDIS?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of support funded by the NDIS that helps people with higher support needs live more independently in a shared home or sometimes on their own. It provides assistance with daily tasks such as personal care, cooking, cleaning, and building life skills. SIL supports autonomy, social connection, and overall wellbeing.

At Woodville Alliance, we provide SIL services tailored to each person’s goals and needs. This includes support at our West Hoxton home in South West Sydney.

Who is Eligible for SIL?

To receive SIL funding, participants must meet specific criteria set by the NDIS. Generally, you may be eligible if you:

  • Having higher support needs that require help throughout the day or night
  • Would benefit from living in a shared home
  • Have SIL included in your NDIS plan

Eligibility is determined through an NDIS home and living assessment that takes into account a person’s goals, daily support needs, and level of independence. This process often involves discussions with your support coordinator, allied health professionals, and your chosen provider.

What Support Does SIL Offer?

SIL is not just about daily tasks. It is also about creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where people can thrive. Support may include:

  • Help with personal care, like showering and getting dressed
  • Support with household tasks, such as cooking and cleaning
  • Skills development, including money handling and decision-making
  • 24/7 support or overnight assistance, if required

The goal is to provide consistent and respectful support while promoting independence and choice.

SIL Funding and Application Process

The first step to accessing SIL is having it funded in your NDIS plan. Your NDIS planner or support coordinator will work with you to assess whether SIL is the most appropriate option based on your goals, functional capacity, and reports from your treating professionals.

Once SIL funding is approved, here is how the process generally works with a provider like us:

  1. Initial enquiry – Reach out to the disability service provider to express interest.
  2. Visit the property and meet the housemates – This allows you to see the home, ask questions, and get a sense of the environment.
  3. Assessment for fit – The provider will assess whether the home and supports align with your physical, emotional and social needs. It’s a two-way process that ensures suitability for everyone.
  4. Apply for the vacancy – If it is the right fit, you or your support team will formally apply.
  5. Service quote – The provider prepares and submits a quote to the NDIS outlining the support needed and associated costs.

Woodville Alliance supports participants and their support networks throughout this process with a person-centred and transparent approach.

Choosing the Right SIL Provider

Choosing a SIL provider is an important decision. Here are some things to consider:

  • Do they offer consistent, reliable, and person-centred support?
  • Will they take the time to understand your preferences and goals?
  • Do you feel safe, respected, and listened to?
  • Are the homes inclusive and suited to your needs?
  • Can you be involved in decisions about who you live with?

We believe everyone deserves a safe and supportive place to call home. We work closely with each participant to ensure their living arrangement suits their needs and supports their goals.
