Moving to a new day program centre is a big change. Whether you’re a participant or a family member, it’s normal to feel a mix of emotions such as excitement, curiosity, and sometimes a little uncertainty.
At Woodville Alliance, we understand that adjusting to a new routine and space takes time. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help both participants and families feel more confident and supported as they settle into a new environment.
1. Understanding the New Routine
Routines can provide structure and reassurance, especially when things feel unfamiliar.
Families can support the transition by talking through the daily plan each morning or using visual cues at home to reinforce what the day will look like. For participants, chatting with staff about what to expect can also help ease any nerves.
At Woodville Alliance, we’re happy to provide printed or visual schedules. We can also work with you to gently introduce changes at a pace that feels right.
2. Getting to Know the New Environment
It’s important to feel comfortable in your surroundings. That’s why we encourage families and participants to visit the new centre before starting. Ideally, this would be when a preferred activity is happening. Seeing the space during a familiar session, like cooking, music, or art, can help it feel more inviting from the start.
During these visits, our team will walk you through the layout, point out quiet spaces or calm areas, and explain how safety cues and signage work. When participants have a chance to explore on their own terms, the new centre quickly begins to feel more like their own space.
3. Meeting Staff and Fellow Participants
Building connections with staff and peers is a key part of settling in.
At Woodville Alliance, we take the time to introduce participants to both new and familiar faces. Wherever possible, we aim to allocate staff who share similar interests or are already known to the participant. This helps create a smoother and more trusting start.
Families can help by reassuring participants that friendly, supportive people are there to help. They can also encourage and celebrate small wins, like greeting someone new or joining a group activity.
4. Bringing Comfort from Home
Sometimes, a small item from home can make a big difference.
Participants may choose to bring something familiar, such as a favourite lunchbox, a comfort toy, or a sensory tool. These items can offer reassurance throughout the day, especially during moments of transition or downtime.
Families are encouraged to work with staff to ensure these items are kept accessible and used in ways that support the participant’s needs.
5. Communicating Together
Every transition looks a little different, so it’s important to check in regularly.
If something feels overwhelming, too fast-paced, or just not quite right, please let us know. We welcome feedback from both participants and families. We are happy to adjust routines, activity schedules, or environments wherever possible.
Our team is committed to person-centred support. Open communication helps us ensure every participant feels seen, heard, and comfortable.
6. Celebrating the Wins
Adjusting to a new centre is a journey, and every small step matters.
Whether it’s completing a full day, trying a new activity, or getting to know a peer, each moment of progress deserves to be acknowledged. Families can support this by talking positively about the day at home and reflecting on the things that went well.
We do the same at our centres. We celebrate successes and encourage participants as they find their rhythm in their new routine.
